Online car insurance usability in the news again

Hot off the press from e-consultancy.com, is a news item covering a report from Fool Proof covering online car insurance. We did a similar report back in June, benchmarking the user experience of 20 Irish, UK and US car insurance websites.

According to the news item on e-consultancy, FoolProof

found that online insurers are losing customers due to usability issues with the quote process. The survey found that 23% of potential customers abandoned quotes in frustration, without waiting to get a price.

Occupation questions were cited as the principal reason for quote abandonment, as customers often cannot find their occupation listed on insurer’s sites

Occupation Preoccupation

We also identified the last point in our recent usability report, and is something we termed “occupation preoccupation”, where having to choose an occupation was placing undue cognitive load on the customer. For example, on Allianz.ie, the poor user has to choose from a list of 262 occupations. None of which matched usability analyst!

While Fool Proof’s report seems really well researched, they are charging 3,995 of the Queen’s pounds for their report. Our report, Benchmarking the user experience of car insurance websites which covers 20 insurance websites in Ireland, the UK and the US is available FREE, GRATIS and for nothing. You pays your money (or not) and you takes your choice.
