Google Calendar has added Meteor, O2 and Vodafone to their notification options. Previously, if using Google Calendar in an Irish context, you could only get reminders sent to your email address. Now, they can also arrive on your mobile via a text message. Nice

it costs me nothing to get Google Cal alerts via email to alias to 085XXXXXXX@sms.mymeteor.ie to mobile, nothing, filterable with procmail and free.

Wow. That is nice. But I’ve just moved to the calendar in Backpack (and they don’t support Irish mobiles!). I’d be tempted to move back.

Wihoo! Delighted to hear it.
As for a charge, I’m (nearly) sure there is none.
And as for the Backpack calendar, I had been wondering what Backpack offers that Google doesn’t. On a very initial look, they seemed quite similar. Eoghan, did Backpack seem to offer anything different or better than google?

Just signed up for it and there definitely is no charge, as no Irish operators charge you to receive text messages.

Hi Brian,
Two advantages over Google:
1. Consistency within Backpack. (I keep Backpack open all day and it’s nice to have my reminders and notes and calendar events, etc. in the one place.)
2. Simplicity. (There are far less features in Backpack and so the interface is that little bit easier to use.)
Two disadvantages:
1. It’s slow. (Their servers are in the US and Google would have local servers for their main apps and it shows! But Jason from 35Signals says they’re looking into a European mirror.)
2. Mobile reminders don’t work in Ireland.
