Why Google Analytics?
As many of you will know, Google Analytics is a free product. Our take on it is that instead of forking out on a potentially expensive analytics product, first spend time and money on getting professional services to figure out what are the metrics you should be measuring and then, how to interpret the data you can use to improve your website.
Our experience with Web Analytics
Over the last four years, we've been helping many of our clients figure out how to make sense of their analytics data. More recently, Brian Donohue, our resident analytics expert, has run an IIA Analytics workshop and chaired the analytics breakout session at the recent IIA congress. Back in March, Brian spoke alongside Brian Clifton, head of Google's EMEA Web Analytics Team, at Search Marketing World 2007.
So, what is Web Analytics?
Well, it's far more than numbers of visitors and page impressions for a start! Web analytics is a process of systematically evaluating a website to determine what's really happening when visitors locate and use your site. There are three main goals with regard to web analytics:
- Better understand your users
- Make web design decisions based on data, not hunches
- Improve your website
The main challenges of web analytics are:
- Identify the metrics that matter
- Ignore the ones that don't
- Use metrics that are actionable, that lead to making a change
